There are many challenges associated with growing sweet corn, which is why this project aimed to breed sweet corn with superior cold germination, early vigor, husk protection, disease resistance, and high eating quality. Due to an unseasonably cold spring, there were crop failures in two of the three fields, however, the successful crop did have early vigor ratings.
More cycles of selection must occur before determining if improvement has been made in the quality of the populations. This researching is ongoing through the Nothern Organic Vegetable Collaborative project (NOVIC).Ed. note: We’re pleased to report that NOVIC received USDA Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative funding in 2010 to continue this project and other breeding work.
