Aphids are a common problem for organic broccoli growers as their infestation makes the broccoli unmarketable. If the alarm pheromone in aphids on broccoli could be triggered it would result in easier organic broccoli growth and sale. However, the cabbage aphids showed no signs of emitting an alarm pheromone. It is possible that because cabbage aphids have other chemical defenses they do not release an alarm pheromone, or that broccoli and cabbage lack compounds that are required for aphids to produce the alarm pheromone. Further research needs to be done, as though this study showed no signs of cabbage aphids containing an alarm pheromone, it is possible they only do so under conditions which were not explored in this project.
